GM turned off a good chunk of its potential buyer base when it announced that it would phase-out Android Auto and Apple Carplay support from its infotainment systems. They believed their own in-house system (built on Android Automotive) was all that anyone needed. I’m sure they also saw the potential to force subscriptions of their services into your life too through these systems.

As it turns out, that might not have been the best play and GM has basically admitted to that, at least on a couple of upcoming vehicles. Today, GM announced that both Android Auto and Apple Carplay are back with the launch of the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra.

Of course, this re-launch to their own native software comes with an annoying limitation. Instead of letting the phone projection system (Auto or Carplay) take over the entire main display of the truck, GM has decided to only allow for projection to have a portion of the display. It’s basically a hybrid or split-screen setup that still shows some of their native system info alongside Android Auto or Carplay.

Here’s a look at both of those setups.

While this is at least some positive news, GM did not mention that this new experience, with Android Auto and Apple Carplay support, would arrive on any other future vehicles. They also didn’t mention bringing support to older vehicles that were cut off from phone projection systems.

This is a bit of a win, assuming they show this same support going forward.
