Goodreads Finally Adds Half (and Quarter) Star Ratings

Goodreads holds a strange place in the bookish internet. It’s widely used, but it’s also a relic: it feels like the old internet, and the app is clunky to use. Since Amazon acquired it back in 2013, the interface has stayed almost identical.

By far, the most requested feature that users have been demanding for years was half stars: the ability to rate a book 3.5 stars, for example, instead of 3 or 5. And now, inexplicably, after so many years of requests, half and quarter stars have finally been added to Goodreads.

You can add half or quarter star ratings now, and you can also go back and change your existing ratings. After waiting more than a decade for this, it feels shocking for it to have finally happened.

Of course, many users already jumped ship before this update, whether to avoid supporting Amazon or because they prefer other book trackers that have popped up. (The Storygraph has allowed half and quarter stars from the start.)
