𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐚’𝐬 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Chelsea started the game looking completely comfortable on the ball, and Morgan Rogers’ early goal made it feel like this could be a straightforward win. But Hull City, currently in the top four, responded well and exposed some familiar weaknesses in our defence.

One positive was that Chelsea did a better job of preventing Hull from counterattacking through the middle. However, their attacks down our right side, particularly against Gusto, remained a concern. With Reece James playing in midfield, the defensive responsibilities on that side were different, and Hull found opportunities to exploit them.

The first Hull goal came from a defensive error involving Hato, making things far too easy for the opposition. Colwill also looked overly aggressive at times. As a central defender, there are moments when the priority should be maintaining position and protecting the space behind you, especially when Hull were looking to play balls over the top.

Overall, it was a poor defensive performance. The midfield looked slightly better, but not enough to suggest that the underlying problems have been solved.

The attack, on the other hand, remains Chelsea’s biggest positive. Rogers, Palmer and João Pedro continue to look dangerous, and Chelsea created good chances whenever we had possession. That quality is encouraging, but we cannot keep relying on the attack to compensate for defensive mistakes.

I expected a little more from Barco, but it is still early in his Premier League career, so there is no reason to judge him too harshly yet.

The bigger question is whether Chelsea should continue with a four-man defence or return to three at the back. The four-man system offers a more conventional midfield structure, but today it also exposed some defensive vulnerabilities.

Chelsea’s attack looks promising, but the defensive structure still needs serious work. Until that improves, turning good performances into consistent wins will remain a challenge.
