2,180cc-Powered, Baja-Style 1970 Volkswagen Beetle

This 1970 Volkswagen Beetle features a Baja build with a laid-fiberglass body kit that was installed in the 1980s. The seller tells us that its air-cooled flat-four was built in 1996 by Dean Lowry of Santa Ana, California, and the vehicle was subsequently parked for more than 20 years. Other details include a four-speed manual transaxle, reinforced suspension, Bilstein dampers, polished wide-five 15″ alloys, and front disc brakes. Its air-conditioned black interior has high-back bucket seats, a CB radio, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a custom sound system with three subwoofers. This Beetle is offered on behalf of an estate with an Arizona title.

The vehicle was salvaged after its metal body was damaged in the early 1980s. A laid-fiberglass yellow body kit was then installed, and it features a custom front hood, flared fenders, and a ducktail engine cover. Other details include off-road lights, tubular bumpers, and tinted windows.

The running gear features reinforced spindles, gusseted trailing arms, Delrin front bushings, and Bilstein shocks. A Porsche 356-specification steering box is noted, as are annular front disc brakes, which are paired with rear drums for stopping power. The staggered-width 15″ polished wide-five alloys are mounted with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO tires.

The black interior has high-back bucket seats, carpeted floors, a Cobra CB radio, and air conditioning. The sound system features custom enclosures in the cargo area, and it has MB Quart speakers, three subwoofers, and an Alpine head unit.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel frames the 90-mph speedometer, which has a five-digit mechanical odometer showing 19k miles. The seller notes that approximately 600 miles were added under current ownership, with only ~10 driven since 1996.

The air-cooled flat-four displaces 2,180cc, per the seller, who tells us that the engine has a Claude’s Buggies 82mm crankshaft, Pauter connecting rods, match-ported 42x37mm cylinder heads, 10:1 compression, 1.25:1 roller rocker arms, a Weber carburetor, MSD ignition components, an auxiliary oil cooler with an electric fan, and a 16-gallon fuel tank. Dynamometer measurements of 124 horsepower and 142 lb-ft of torque are reported.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle with a Kennedy Engineered clutch assembly.
