Chelsea is considering Jules Koundé as a possible January signing, with the Barcelona defender interested in joining the London club, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. Xabi Alonso is looking for more cover at right-back, and the France international is among the options being assessed.

Bailey reports that Barcelona has told Koundé’s representatives it plans to sell him in 2027, with a January departure also possible. Eric García and João Cancelo have moved ahead of him in Hansi Flick’s selection.

The club agreed an extension through June 2030 in August last year, giving it considerable room to negotiate. Reduced playing time could influence Koundé’s wishes, but there is no approaching expiry forcing Barcelona to accept a sale.

His record explains why Chelsea would consider him. Barcelona’s announcement highlighted 86 consecutive appearances between November 2023 and April 2025, followed by a total of 53 outings across the 2024-25 season. Few defenders in that squad carried a comparable workload.

Koundé may still have an opportunity to improve his position before January. AS reported on September 25 that Andreas Christensen’s injury could create more space for him in central defense, his preferred role. A run of games there would give Flick another chance to assess him before the window opens.
