GTA 6 on Switch 2? ‘That’s a Conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar,’ Nintendo Says

Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard recently spoke about the company’s plans, from theme parks to first- and third-party games. And with the launch of Switch 2, the door is open to more third-party games that previously skipped Nintendo consoles (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is one example). So what about GTA 6?

The Switch 2 is of course more powerful than its predecessor, capable of running games like Cyberpunk 2077 and the recent The Witcher 3 remaster. But could it run GTA 6? And, if so, will Rockstar Games release a Switch 2 port? After all, it’s coming out on the less powerful Xbox Series S next month.

“That’s going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time,” Pritchard told Variety when asked about GTA 6 on Switch 2. Bah!

Rockstar games Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, and L.A. Noire are already on Switch, but the developer hasn’t announced anything about Red Dead Redemption 2, never mind GTA 6. Would Manhunt be asking too much? Rockstar’s sequel, Manhunt 2, famously featured platform-specific controls for pummeling in heads with the motion controllers, and that’d work nicely on Switch 2 and make any onlookers afraid of taking me on when I play it on the train.

“We have historically said that Nintendo is for ages 5 to 95, and that continues to be true,” Pritchard said. “We want to provide a diversity in terms of the types of experiences that you can have on the game system, and that’s really important for us.”

Nintendo’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launches on November 5, just two weeks before the launch of GTA 6. It’s about as close to Rockstar’s launch any triple-A game has dared, but Nintendo knows it has a captive audience of dedicated fans who love its stuff.

A recent SNL skit parodied the double-bill gaming launches, calling it video games’ Barbenheimer. The one-two punch of Zelda and GTA 6 toward the end of the year really tops off a fantastic year in video games.

We’ve had good friend times with Big Walk, industry leading combat in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first essential Bond game since GoldenEye with 007: First Light, the tantalising tactics and deep social mechanics of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Wave, and loads more. It feels like we’re at that time in the console cycle where the developers have learned how to get the most out of the machines, and now we’re seeing what everyone can really do.

Now Rockstar just needs to prove it’s the wizard it is and squeeze GTA 6 onto Switch 2 so we can play it on the loo. Please, Rockstar. I need this. On the loo.
