1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z11 Pace Car Convertible 396 4-Speed

This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible is equipped with the Z11 option, which added the RS and SS packages as well as trim and decals in the style of the Camaro pace car used at the 1969 Indianapolis 500. The car was first delivered to Dumas-Milner Chevrolet in Miami and was refurbished in 2016. Power is provided by a 396ci Turbo-Jet V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a Positraction differential. Finished in white with orange stripes over Orange vinyl and houndstooth cloth upholstery, the car is equipped with a white convertible soft top, 15″ Rally wheels, front disc brakes, power-assisted steering, concealed headlights, a body-color front bumper, front and rear spoilers, an AM radio, and air conditioning. The seller purchased the car in 2020. This Camaro pace car convertible is now offered with a Protect-O-Plate, a window sticker, dealer documentation, and a clean New Hampshire title in the seller’s name.

The Z11 package was introduced in early 1969 to outfit a limited run of production convertibles with trim replicating that of the official pace cars built for the 53rd Indianapolis 500. Fewer than 3,700 cars were sold with the option, all finished in Dover White with Z/28-style stripes in Hugger Orange. This example has been refinished. Exterior equipment includes a white convertible soft top, cowl vents, faux rear fender louvers, orange stripes, retractable headlights, dual side mirrors, front and rear spoilers, and a body-color front bumper.

The 15″ Rally wheels are mounted with 215/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in Orange vinyl and houndstooth cloth. Interior appointments include an AM radio, a center console, and air conditioning.

The three-spoke steering wheel is mounted to a tilting column and frames a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and an analog clock, while gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, voltage, and coolant temperature are mounted to the center console. The five-digit odometer shows 2,500 miles, approximately 1,850 of which were added under current ownership. The seller states the mileage is not accurate, and total mileage is unknown.

The 396ci Turbo-Jet L35 V8 was factory rated at 325 horsepower and is topped with a cowl induction air cleaner assembly.

The engine stamping is shown above. The JB suffix corresponds with a 325-horsepower, 396ci L35 V8 for use with a manual transmission.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and an optional Positraction differential.

Decoding the Fisher body tag reveals the following information:

  • Build Date: 02D – Fourth week of February build date
  • Style: 69 12467 – 1969 Camaro convertible
  • Body: NOR 2699225DY – Norwood, Ohio, assembly, body number
  • Trim: 720 – Orange vinyl and houndstooth cloth
  • Paint: 50-A – Dover White
  • A: White soft top

The window sticker, Protect-O-Plate, owner’s manuals, and an orange top boot are included in the sale. The Protect-O-Plate lists the engine suffix as JU, which was reserved for Camaros optioned with the MA6 heavy-duty clutch. However, that option was canceled for the Camaro, and none were produced with it.
