1984 Smeal International Pumper Tanker

This 1984 Smeal International pumper tanker is an International S-Series 1724 cab-chassis truck fitted with a Smeal Model V-801 1,000-gallon tanker body. It is powered by a 392ci gasoline V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission and is equipped with a PTO-driven 750-GPM pump, a Waterous pressure-control system, and a deluge gun along with demountable-rim 20″ wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, leaf-spring suspension, and power steering. The canopy cab is fitted with a light bar and features a brown vinyl bench seat, a Radio Shack 500-channel scanner, and a Federal Signal Corporation siren controller. This Smeal-bodied S1724 was previously employed in the service of the Thornton (Iowa) Fire Department and was purchased by the seller in 2024. It is now offered with an Iowa title in the name of the seller’s company.

The steel body is finished in red with white accents, and department-specific markings have been removed from the canopy cab, which features an enclosed front section, a semi-enclosed rear-facing crew area, grab rails, a diamond-plate fuel tank/side steps, West-Coast-style mirrors, a polished front bumper, and a forward-tilting hood. A light bar is mounted on the roof, two-sided turn signals are mounted atop the fenders, marker lights are inset above the windshield, single-faced lollipop emergency lights are attached to the grille, and emergency beacon lights are located at the rear of the rig along with a work lamp. In addition to a 1,000-gallon water tank, the body features pump equipment, a hose bed, ladder racks, and various utility box compartments.

The pump operator’s station is located opposite an open-air rear-facing bench seat and is equipped with pump- and tank-monitoring instrumentation including a Waterous pressure-control system with Smeal-branded Span Instruments pressure and vacuum gauges, an MC Products Mark 5 liquid-level monitor, and a Hobbs hour meter, as well as throttle and Chelsea PTO controls, a set of Stewart-Warner engine-monitoring gauges, and intake/discharge valve-control levers. A Federal Signal Night-Fighter three-lamp area light is mounted to one side of the operator’s station and a swiveling deluge gun assembly on the other.

Demountable 20″ steel wheels wearing Goodyear Super Hi-Miler front and Custom Xtra Grip Hi-Miler rear tires are clamped to five-spoke cast-iron hubs. The truck is equipped with power steering, power-assisted disc brakes, and leaf-spring suspension.

The cabin houses a brown vinyl bench seat and is equipped with a Radio Shack 500-channel scanner, a Federal Signal Corporation PA200 siren and PA system, a Kenwood microphone with a magnetic holder, and a heater.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts an 85-mph speedometer, a 4k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, voltage, and fuel level. A separate Stewart-Warner voltmeter is located on the central dash alongside a 12-volt accessory outlet and a Smeal fire apparatus switch panel. The five-digit odometer shows 10k miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 392ci V8 was rated at approximately 235 horsepower at 4k-rpm and 356 lb-ft of torque at 2,800-rpm when new. The oil was changed in preparation for the sale.

Power is sent to the dually rear axle through a five-speed manual transmission.

The Carfax report lists no accidents or other damage along with history in Iowa.
