1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata Race Car

This 1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata was converted into a race car and campaigned in various SCCA races following the seller’s acquisition circa 2024. The car wears a blue vinyl wrap and is fitted with a front lip spoiler as well as an Advanced Autosports weld-in roll cage. It rides on 15″ Kosei K1 wheels with Hoosier racing slicks and is equipped with a depowered steering rack, a Wilwood four-piston front brake kit, and Rev9 adjustable coilovers. Inside, the stripped cockpit houses a single Kirkey racing seat accompanied by a MOMO steering wheel, a MiataRoadster short shifter, and a SPA Technique fire-suppression system. The 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four is managed by a MegaSquirt standalone ECU and has a modified intake along with a 4-2-1 header flowing into a Borla 3″ exhaust system, while shifting is through a five-speed manual transmission. This NA Miata race car is now offered with SCCA and MCSCC logbooks, a seller-provided maintenance log, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Crystal White (UC), the car wears a blue vinyl wrap as well as various decals and is equipped with a front lip spoiler, aftermarket mirrors, and red-finished front and rear tow points. The hood was replaced in September 2025 following damage, and the replacement unit is secured by AeroCatch-style latches. The car is not equipped with headlamps or a convertible top.

The 15×7″ Kosei K1 wheels are mounted with Hoosier racing slicks, while braking is handled by Wilwood four-piston calipers over ventilated rotors up front as well as single-piston calipers over slotted discs out back. The seller tells us that Rev9 adjustable coilovers were installed in April 2023, and that the steering rack was depowered in April 2025. Further modifications are said to include a Flyin’ Miata front sway bar and adjustable end links along with braided brake lines and Hawk Blue rear brake pads.

The stripped cabin is protected by a weld-in Advanced Autosports roll cage. A Kirkey bucket seat trimmed in black cloth is provided for the driver and paired with a June 2026–dated harness from G-Force Racing. A QuickCar switch panel has been added in the center stack, and additional racing equipment includes a SPA Technique fire-suppression system, an electrical system kill switch, and a convex overhead mirror. The air conditioning system has been removed, though the defroster has been retained.

The MOMO MOD. 78 steering wheel is mounted to an NRG quick-release hub and paired with a MiataRoadster short shifter. A Pro Tach tachometer and gauges for oil pressure and coolant temperature have been added in place of the removed factory instrument cluster. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and the last recorded mileage entry on the Carfax lists 154k miles in September 2014. True mileage is unknown.

The 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four is equipped with a modified intake as well as a 4-2-1 header flowing into a Borla 3″ exhaust system. The seller notes that a MegaSquirt MSPNP Pro standalone ECU and wideband O2 sensor setup were installed in July 2025 and that the engine was tuned on a dynamometer by Mike Pico of Ghost Tuner. The car is not equipped with a catalytic converter.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. A Fidanza aluminum flywheel, ACT unsprung racing clutch kit, and a braided clutch line were reportedly installed in April 2025. The seller notes leaks from the front main seal of the engine and at the transmission output shaft.

A collection of photos of the car on track in 2025 can be viewed at the end of the gallery. Three printouts detailing expenses, work, and race results over the seller’s two years with the car can be viewed in the gallery.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage.
