- The M5 Touring’s twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid would be perfect for highway police.
- This one-off M5 Touring includes the Polizei’s familiar blue, white, and yellow livery.
- If police want to order M5 Tourings like this, BMW could make them.
Police in Germany use a wide array of vehicles from brands like VW, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW, and if the latter has its way, local authorities may soon be cruising around in the high-performance M5 Touring. If you want a vehicle that’ll dissuade criminals from running, this is certainly one way to do it.
This wild M5 Touring, currently a one-off, was brought to life under the watchful eye of Sascha Eifel, the Head of Development Authority and Special Vehicle / Functional Safety at BMW M, as well as former head of development Dirk Häcker. The first task was making it look like a police vehicle.

As BMW already builds 5 Series Tourings for Germany’s Federal Police, it had a blue, white, and fluorescent yellow livery ready to go. However, as the M5 Touring sits much wider than a standard 5-Series, the livery had to be modified to fit over the bulky new fenders and aggressive bumpers. Now with the wrap fitted, the car looks like a legitimate police cruiser, even though it remains a show car at this stage.
BMW cautions that this dramatic M5 Touring isn’t ready to start catching criminals, even though it may look like it. Aside from the livery and the flashing light bar mounted to the roof, the car doesn’t have any of the accessories required for an actual police car. BMW also added its own logo on the rear doors, rather than the Bavarian state flag that the police use.
Plug-In V8 Power
While this car remains a one-off, Eifel appears hopeful that the carmaker will receive interest from police departments for an M5 Touring. Rocking a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with a plug-in hybrid system, the car delivers an impressive 717 hp and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque, which would make it perfect for police operating on Germany’s high-speed motorways. Additionally, the M5 Touring offers an all-electric driving range of up to 40 miles (65 km), making it ideal for silently creeping through cities and neighborhoods.
