Four-Decades-Owned 1964.5 Ford Mustang Convertible D-Code 289 at No Reserve

This 1964.5 Ford Mustang convertible has been owned by the current owner for more than 40 years and is powered by a D-code 289ci 4V V8 paired with a C-4 three-speed automatic transmission. The car is finished in Vintage Burgundy over a black interior and features a power-retractable white convertible soft top, 14″ steel wheels with faux knock-off covers, power steering, chrome bumpers, and front bucket seats. This Mustang is now offered at no reserve on dealer consignment with transferable New York registration.

The car is finished in Vintage Burgundy and features a power-retractable white convertible soft top, a black boot cover, rocker-panel moldings, and chrome bumpers. The seller believes the car was repainted, although the timing and details are unknown. The soft top has multiple taped or patched sections, and the rear window is heavily clouded and discolored with apparent separation at the upper corners.

The 14″ steel wheels wear faux knock-off covers and 205/70 narrow whitewalls. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by front and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl, and a more modern radio has been installed. The left-rear seat bottom has been patched.

Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer flanked by fuel-level and water-temperature gauges. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 87k miles, with a few thousand miles added under current ownership.

The 289ci V8 was factory rated at 210 horsepower.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a C-4 three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.00:1 conventional rear axle.

Decoding the trim tag reveals the following information:

  • Body 76A – Convertible with standard interior
  • Color X – Vintage Burgundy paint
  • Trim 86 – Black vinyl and trim
  • Date 03G – July 1964 build date
  • DSO 36 – Louisville district sales office
  • Axle 1 – 3.00:1 conventional rear axle ratio
  • Trans 6 – C-4 automatic

The car is sold with its transferable New York registration, which lists the car as a 1965 model year and serves as proof of ownership.
