Four-Decades-Family-Owned 1926 Paige 6-72 Five-Passenger Sedan Project

This 1926 Paige 6-72 is a five-passenger sedan that is said to have passed through two owners before being purchased in the 1980s by the seller’s sister and brother-in-law. The car was purchased by the seller one year ago and has since remained in storage. Finished in blue and black, the car is powered by a 249ci L-head inline-six that is paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Additional features include a single updraft carburetor, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, 20” wood-spoke wheels with demountable rims, brown cloth interior upholstery, and a contoured rear luggage trunk. This Paige 6-72 is now offered as a project with tools, a pair of window awnings, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Founded in 1909 as Paige-Detroit, Paige debuted its first six-cylinder range in 1915 and continued to offer evolutions of the Six series until its 1927 acquisition by Graham Brothers. Four body styles were available on the 6-72 model’s 125” wheelbase, including this example’s five-passenger sedan coachwork. The car is finished in blue and black with beige pinstriping, and various imperfections in the finish include areas of corrosion at the front of the hood panels. Features include centrally latching doors, a fabric roof panel, a windshield visor, bright bumpers, running boards, and a body-color rear trunk that is contoured to align with the rear body profile.

Wood-spoke wheels wear demountable rims that are mounted with 6.00-20 Denman wide-whitewall tires, while a spare is housed under a black fabric cover at the rear of the car. Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes with externally contracting bands became available as an option for Paige models in 1924 and were made standard for 1926. This example’s wheel cylinders are noted to be leaking.

The cabin is trimmed in brown cloth over front and rear bench seats with matching upholstery over the door panels. Additional features include color-matched carpeting, door pockets, rear window roller blinds, a rear footrest, and a rear robe rope. A variety of tools and parts are present under the front seat and in the trunk.

The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a black-painted dashboard that houses a drum-style speedometer and gauges monitoring fuel level, oil pressure, amperage, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 77k miles, and the car has not been driven while under the seller’s ownership.

The 249ci inline-six incorporates three main crankshaft bearings, side valves, and a single updraft carburetor. Output was factory rated at 72 horsepower.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed manual transmission. Suspension incorporates leaf-sprung solid axles with mechanical shock absorbers at front and rear.
