What makes cat memes iconic?

There’s no one conclusive answer to that question, but as the person curating lolcats for quite some time, and a long-time Cheezburger goodness connoisseur, I think I can make an educated guess.

First of all, a cat meme becomes iconic if it has enough iterations. Sure, some cat memes become super-popular on their own, but if you really think about it, that’s the rare case. Try to remember how many versions of Grumpy Cat you know. And what about the Business Cat meme? Meowing heck, even the Cheezburger cat meme has already Can Had in a variety of ways over the years. So when a cat meme is funny enough to take on nine lives of its own, it usually becomes truly iconic.

Second of all, there’s the aspect of not a single cat meme, but a group of cat memes with internet fame. And that has only one ultra-iconic example I can think of… lolcats. That’s right, our very own lolcat section of the I Can Has site is the bed for some of the most iconic memes that circle the internet today. And since another Caturday came by, it’s time to celebrate it with another round of weekly lolcats – making icons one meme and meow at a time.
