Have you ever been at a job for much less time than you anticipated?
There are not very many people who accept a job offer with the expectation of getting fired before the probationary period even ends, but it is not an uncommon experience. Corporate or not, many companies can be pretty brutal when it comes to deciding that they made the wrong hiring decision. No matter how great the employee was in the interview, they simply don’t stand a chance.
Losing a job is not an uncommon experience; a lot of people in the workforce have gone through it at some point. Still, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t sting, especially for those who have spent copious amounts of time trying to build a viable career for themselves. We are all fed the narrative that the right kind of education, experience, and networking with the right people is a guaranteed key to success, but that doesn’t always line up with reality. This system relies on employers being competent and moral, something that many fail at.
While it is often the case that an employee can see the writing on the wall before they are let go, this isn’t always the case. Even if it doesn’t come as a surprise, it is usually demoralizing. This isn’t the kind of job market that anybody wants to have to enter, let alone unwillingly. This kind of situation isn’t just a blow to the ego, but also to the finances.
